Authentic Happiness
positive psychology
Martin Seligman is the founder and leading member of the ‘positive psychology’ movement.
Authentic Happiness is scientifically based and, in contrast to many self improvement books, provides a concrete and useful road map to leading a happy and fulfilled life.
signature strengths
Seligman asserts that true and lasting happiness can be cultivated by identifying and using many of the strengths and traits that we already possess, our ‘signature strengths’.
His book contains exercises to identify your signature strengths and outlines how these can be nurtured and deployed throughout life, thereby benefitting our health, relationships and careers.
why we like this book
We read this book when it first came out in 2003. Its message about the sources of true, authentic happiness rings true for us. An engaging writer with an uplifting and inspiring message.
links
Here’s a link to Martin Seligman’s talk about positive psychology on TED (one of our favourite websites) and being interviewed by Jeremy Paxman.
Visit his Authentic Happiness website to see the latest developments in positive psychology. From it you can access a wide variety of questionnaires, including one which we found very interesting for identifying the signature strengths of children. You need to register, but the questionnaires are free.
Here’s a link to Amazon if you would like to read more reviews or buy the book.
